Re: Midi In with Audigy 2 ZS

Ok. Maybe I'm not understanding something fundamental here. If so, I would really appreciate it if someone could explain it to me. I have been told twice now that I need to load a soundfont into my SB card. Why??? A soundfont is just a collection of sounds to be played by midi instructions, and I really don't care about 'sounds' at all at this point (i'm going to use Zyn or QSynth anyway). Right now, I just want to see if the data being sent by my keyboard is being received/processed by my soundcard. I know there are simple ways of checking this, such as,

amidi -p myport -d              or
dd if=/dev/snd/midiC2D{0,1} bs=1

(i think these should work). I have tried loading soundfonts into my card with asfxload or whatever that program is called and nothing changed, of course, because the problem is that my soundcard is not processing the midi signals in the first place (unless the soundfont loading does some sort of initialization of the Live Drive, but... then it should have worked, and it didn't). I have gotten midi in to work with this soundcard on older versions of fedora core (with older versions of alsa i'm sure).

You need to load the soundfont, of course, and then connect input to
sampler using qjackctl. There is no need to run jack all the time, it
works without it too.
