There is another thread on the list regarding using a different 
compiler for the kernel and the drivers causing problems.  Were both 
compiled with the same compiler.  I assume they were, but just checking.

Hardware error???

I'm out of ideas after these.  I suggest you ask about this on the 
alsa-devel mailing list.  For some reason it isn't recognizing your 
card even though it is loading the module for it.
