Tried it two different ways: 
#> alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

#> alsamixer -c "TenxTech"       I get the ncurses gui but I can't move the slider off of 0.   Just does nothing.

What is amixer doing now?

Really though, why are you using amixer vs alsamixer. It's visual
interface let's me see more of what's going on, or so I think. Have
you tried alsamixer?
