Usually when there is a conflict between a bicycle and a car, the
cyclist ends up dead, so you were very fortunate.

   1. snd-atiixp-modem: index=-2
   2. snd-intel8x0m: index=-2
   3. snd-via82xx-modem: index=-2

This indicates that you have modems that alsa is recognizing as sound
devices. You should change it to something like:

   1. snd-intel8x0m: index=0
   2. snd-atiixp-modem: index=1
   3. snd-via82xx-modem: index=2

I think the -2 says to take the first available slot, but not sure.
This specifies that your soundcard will always be device 0, regardless
of the order the devices are loaded; that order varies on every boot.
This is good because the alsa default device is device 0, so sound
should always work. Oh, this is in /etc/modprobe.conf
