record direct from pcm

Dear Friends:

If I try to record from the web, such as using sound record to capture
the output of a file playing from a url, sound record only uses the mic
to capture what is coming out of the laptop speakers.

Obviously, I want to record from card output, not the mic from speakers.

Most posts here are about getting mic to work, which is does fine

The gnome gui shows only analog inputs for digital input source , and
both mics, mic)I presume line in for this) and mic front for input source
(two drop downs, both the same).

best,
Martin
