What type of mic are we talking?  Electret type mics(the kind that most PC style mics seem to be/use) need a voltage(called a bias voltage, or plug-in power for voice recorders).  Without the voltage you need a battery box.  Set it to 3.7V, if you can.  2.25 V should also work.  0V and High-Z would be my last choices.
