Could the problem be related to 32/64 bit code/libraries "mismatch" in apliccation/ALSA/kernel? If I remember correctly I've heard of some possible troubles with "mixed" 32/64bit environments... though I never played with 64bit Linux systems, so I can't tell you much about this.
