You need to look at the complete lsmod listing to see the soundcore module if
it's installed, or do a modinfo soundcore on the CLI to see if it's available
in the kernel. Well having booted my Gentoo install I see there is no
soundcore module, and sound is working ok. The module is loaded on my Debian,
and Fedora installs, and I'd always thought it was necessary. Obviously wrong
as far as Gentoo is concerned.

Personally I'm clutching at straws, but I presume you are a member of the
audio group (permissions problems perhaps).

I know it's frowned upon, but when suspecting permissions problems, I have
logged into KDE as root, and tried out the audio stuff. This at least
verifies if permissions are getting in the way.

I also found on Google a problem with an earlier version of the card, same
mobo, and while Googling AD1980, but it's ancient, and from 2004. See below,
but I don't believe it's your problem.

I don't know how old your mobo is, but if it's very new, it may be worth
compiling the kernel using the latest Alsa driver. See below.

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/alsa/snapshot/driver/

When you unpack the tarball, there's some usefull stuff for the Via card in
Alsa-configuration.txt. Path in the unpacked directory is.

Sorry I can't give more help on your problem. Perhaps someone else more clued
up will assist.

All the best, and may the force be with you.

Nigel.
