Yes. It looks like it was a problem with Mandriva 2.6.17-13mdv. I tried it on 2.6.17-14mdv and everything worked fine. Oh well, sorry to bother you all. The only remaining question is why Mandriva does not have a Modules.symvars file in the source tree, and whether it matters that the files have no versioning info in them.
