OK, I did exactly what you said. If I build, install and reboot without using 'modprobe snd-hda-intel', I get nothing useful, and 'aplay -l' then gives me a segmentation fault. If I remove the modules again, build, install, and then 'modprobe snd-hda-intel' I get: FATAL: Error inserting snd_hda_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.20-16-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) By the way, during the build and install, I get the following warnings: cat: /etc/ld.so.conf.d/*.conf: No such file or directory cat: /etc/ld.so.conf.d/*.conf: No such file or directory libtool: install: warning: relinking `smixer-sbase.la' libtool: install: warning: relinking `smixer-ac97.la' libtool: install: warning: relinking `smixer-hda.la' config.status: WARNING: alsaconf/po/Makefile.in seems to ignore the --datarootdir setting 35 translated messages, 1 untranslated message. 34 translated messages, 1 fuzzy translation, 1 untranslated message. Sorry not to give you better results. I'm doing my best here, honest! Thanks again in advance for any further suggestions.
