I own the same card, though currently it is not installed.
I used it a lot to talk using Skype, and microphone volume was OK.
Please note that the card does not have capture gain control, i.e. itdoesn't have it in hardware.
Try it with Skype - using its 'echo123' "user" which records and then playsback you voice you can hear your voice the way the other side hears it.
Also, check the type of your microphone. I have a gradient one whichsuppresses well ambient noise.
But to use such a microphone you have to hold it only 1-2cm away from yourmouth.
