Sorry if I've posted this twice. It didn't seem to go
the last time, unless I don't recieve my own replies.

Finally got around to giving that a go, but with no
luck. It seems to be an IRQ problem.
aplay -lLv returns no souncards. as does
/proc/asound/cards.
dmesg|grep PCI gives

ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKD] enabled at IRQ 11
PCI: setting IRQ 11 as level-triggered
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:07.2[D] -> Link [LNKD] ->
GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11
pci_hotplug: PCI Hot Plug PCI Core version: 0.5
shpchp: Standard Hot Plug PCI Controller Driver
version: 0.4
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:0d.0[A] -> Link [LNKD] ->
GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11
ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:0d.0 disabled
Yamaha DS-1 PCI: probe of 0000:00:0d.0 failed with
error -13

Which looks like the usb controller is getting the irq
rather than the sound card.

cat /proc/interupts|grep 11
 11:          0          XT-PIC  uhci_hcd:usb1

Don't know if I'm barking up the wrong tree here, but
I assume I could blacklist usbcore (which I'm not
having much luck doing), or would I need to
reconfigure the bios?

Thanks
Liam
