OK, I installed kmix. Now I have Capture and Line (in the Input tab)
on, and the levels moderately high.

I couldn't find this in the kmix panel. I ran amixer which reports:

numid=19,iface=MIXER,name='AC97 Capture Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---R--,values=2,min=0,max=100,step=0
  : values=80,80
  | dBscale-min=-40.00dB,step=0.40dB,mute=1

I tried "amixer cset numid=19 80,80 unmute", but that still left it at mute=1.
Shouldn't mute have been turned off after this command?

I'd done this already, without effect.

BTW, just checking: you're using snd_emu10k1?

Thanks for your help,
Mandar.
