I'll try using line-in later this evening. In the meantime:

What does:

lspci -v|grep -i live

report?

Mine reports:

00:09.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 0a)
         Subsystem: Creative Labs SBLive! 5.1 Digital Model SB0220
00:09.1 Input device controller: Creative Labs SB Live! Game Port (rev 0a)

You should also include the output of

cat /proc/asound/version

for each configuration known to work or known not to work.

Mine reports:

cat /proc/asound/version

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.14rc4.
Compiled on May 13 2007 for kernel 2.6.21 (SMP).
