VIA onboard audio controller and integrated mic

I have a Soyo KT600 Dragon Plus v.1 motherboard which has a VIA
integrated sound card. Alsa is compiled into the kernel and playing
sound works fine. I just can't get anything to record from the mic
jack on the sound card.

Detailed info:
Linux angeliqe 2.6.21-gentoo #1 Wed May 9 19:48:21 EDT 2007 i686 AMD
Athlon(tm) XP 3200+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc.
VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60)
PCI: MSI-K8T-Neo2Fir, attempting to turn soundcard ON
PCI: MSI-K8T-Neo2Fir, soundcard on
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.14rc3 (Wed Mar 14
07:25:50 2007 UTC).

If I run, as root
arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -v foobar.wav
I get

but nothing is recorded. I have all of the channels unmuted and turned
all the way up in alsamixer and mic selected under the capture
section. I'm not sure what else I'm missing. I've found references to
similar issues and a couple posts said something about enabling full
duplex for the sound card, but that setting was in dmix configuration
files. With the newer alsa, dmix is setup automatically for cards that
don't do hardware mixing. I'm kinda lost at this point.
