ALSA just exposes the hardware capabilities.  Probably you are
surprised because these days hardware vendors try to make the hardware
as simple (read: cheap) as possible by pushing hardware functionality
into the (Windows) driver.

A much cleaner solution would be to pass the --with-kernel option to
ALSA's ./configure scripts.

Anyway you don't say how it fails to build so I can't help any more.
Care to provide the exact error messages?
