The mixer controls are unmuted and after modprobing with the
force_ac97=1 parameter passed "aplay somemp3.mp3" gives the following
output:

Playing raw data 'somemp3.mp3' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
aplay: pcm_write:1264: write error: Input/output error

Without the force_ac97 "modprobe snd-nm256" gives:

/lib/modules/2.4.33.3/kernel/sound/pci/nm256/snd-nm256.o: init_module:
No such device
/lib/modules/2.4.33.3/kernel/sound/pci/nm256/snd-nm256.o: Hint: insmod
errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid
IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.33.3/kernel/sound/pci/nm256/snd-nm256.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.33.3/kernel/sound/pci/nm256/snd-nm256.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.33.3/kernel/sound/pci/nm256/snd-nm256.o.gz:
init_module: No such device
/lib/modules/2.4.33.3/kernel/sound/pci/nm256/snd-nm256.o.gz: Hint:
insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ parameters.

/lib/modules/2.4.33.3/kernel/sound/pci/nm256/snd-nm256.o.gz: insmod

/lib/modules/2.4.33.3/kernel/sound/pci/nm256/snd-nm256.o.gz: insmod
snd-nm256 failed

whereas "modprobe snd-nm256 force_ac97=1" works without error and
afterwards, "lsmod|grep snd" gives:

snd-nm256 58440 0
snd-ac97-codec 68160 0 [snd-nm256]

snd 34304 0 [snd-nm256 snd-ac97-codec snd-pcm
snd-timer]
snd-page-alloc 4980 0 [snd-pcm snd-timer snd]
soundcore 3300 0 [snd]
