Slave PCM not usable

Hi!

Recently, I played with the .asoundrc file a lot, but I'm running into
some problems again and again. The most frequent one is that plugins
don't seem to be compatible to each other. For example, I can't have
anything but a hw device as a slave of a multi device, I can't have a
route device as a slave of a ladspa device and vice versa. The list
seems endless and, which is even more unsatisfying, totally arbitrary.

My question is: what is the reason of those incompatibilities? Are they
bugs in the concerned libraries? Or is my personal installation/sound
card/driver or whatsoever? Or is it simply technically not possible
because of some "format conflict" I don't understand?

I have no idea what I should do now. I could try to describe the
problems as precice as possible, but that makes only sense if it's
supposed to work. Or maybe I just need to know more about how the
plugins work. If somebody could give me hints where to find more
information, that'd be great...

Regards, Ingo
