Yeah, I've been told its poor form to answer ones own posts, but I got it. 1: I nuked all the stuff in my modprobe.conf that matched the stuff in /etc/modprobe.d/*, but left those 6 lines that system-config-soundcard had written there before. 2: I rebooted again and checked the stuff in /proc/asound, looked good to me, but what do I know. 3: system-config-soundcard still worked as I expected, no surprise there. 4: on running the kde control-center, Sound & whatever, sound, I found a new multi-selector box that wasn't present before that allowed me to set the default device for kde. It was set for the nvidia stuff, but could be changed to the Creative/Audigy system also, which I did, and now it all works. -- Cheers, Gene "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo.
