Can you please further clarify, I do not understand the answer in
relation to the question.

I am not worried about the 8 bit per color component.
I am trying to allocate more than > 256 color cells. 
An example, I would like to use DirectColor to create 1024 shades of
gray.

Is there some place in the xserver to allow me to change the default
setting. Or where is a site/recommendation to allow me to see what
videos cards support this under Xfree86.

That's because there's very little, if any, hardware supported by the 
server that allows for more than 8 bits per colour component.
