You can refer to the document in /usr/X11R6/lib/doc.

File to configure is /usrX11R6/lib/XF86Config (or is /etc/XF86Config or /etc/X11 in some other version), you can change the parametre Modes in Section "Screen", the order of the values of that parametre is a decrease of priority. If you need the resolution "800x600", you set
 Modes "800x600" "640x480" "1024x768".
