Help After XFree86 install

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

I am told by Core 4 that in order to install the ATI driver that I need, first I must upgrade to XFree86.

sh Xinstall.sh –check tells me to download and install ‘Linux-ix86-glibc23’, which I have done.

After installation, and running the configuration file, I rebooted and ran ‘startx’. All I get is a woven background, with a clock in the upper right corner, and three terminal windows labeled ‘root@localhost:~ ‘.

If I run ‘init 5’, I do get a GUI login screen and I am able to log in. However, when I get to the ‘desktop’, all I have is a terminal in a window, and another box labeled xsm:Default. I don’t seem to be able to start Gnome.

All my icons are gone. Can anyone help me get back on track? My goal is to have Gnome running in 1024 x 768 mode.

Thanks,

Doug
