Linux and pseudocolor

I’ve got an application that requires pseudocolor visual, so on my linux workstation I have to go to video preferences, change to 256 colors, run the app and then change back to thousands or millions of colors when I want a Truecolor visual.  On my Sun workstation (Solaris 8), xdpyinfo reports both a Truecolor visual and a pseudocolor visual.  Is there a way to configure the Xserver to show a pseudocolor visual when operating with ‘millions of colors’?
