vt switching question

Hi:

I'm running XFree86 4.3.0-78 against a Linux 2.4.21 based kernel. Whenever
I attempt to switch back to VT1, or when I exit the server, the vga text
console is corrupt. Generally, a 'setfont' will at least get me readable
text but the background et. al. are still not the original settings. I'm
using vgacon as my low-level vga driver.

I've been using vesa_drv for testing, but have also seen this with fglrx. I've
seen it on two different ATI cards, have not tried another vendor.

Putting a little debug in vesa.c seems to indicate that the right things are
being attempted (VESAEnterVT, VESALeaveVT, etc. are being called), but I'm
by no means an expert in the code so I'm not sure where I should really be
looking.

I've tried various google searches but haven't seen anything that exactly
addresses my problem. I would appreciate any hints/pointers to help get to
the bottom of this.

thanks in advance
Mark
