Just to note that 4.4.99.22 works rather well here. Previously starting X

Now there are no more warnings about undefined symbols and things work
niftily, but this is on an nvidia card.
One note though, the patch for ports upgrade to 4.4.99.22 missed a bit,
updated is here:

That patch to the FreeBSD port worked without a hitch. Unfortunatly the
ati driver still cannot cope with a Dell Inspiron 7500. The ati driver
still creates a totally black screen, and there is still the new message
about an inconsistent Panel size.. that may be a coincidence however.

It's a pitty because 4.3 ran so well on this machine.

I may have to reinstall 4.3 so that we can get comparative logfiles..

The vesa driver "almost" copes. The screen is correct except it has
small stripes across it and somehow it looks "fuzzy".

What's the mode on server entry? The one set up by the Mobility BIOS, or something else? For example, does FreeBSD have something akin to Linux's broken atyfb?

Please send me (privately) a complete -logverbose 4 log and I'll have a look.

OK. Your log implies the attached should fix the problem. This is based on what is currently in our CVS, so season to taste.

Oh, and you can ignore the message about the inconsistency in horizontal panel dimension. The message is inconsequential in this case and the patch ups the verbosity needed to print it. The message is caused by a small rounding error in your adapter BIOS's setting of the horizontal stretch factor it uses for the mode on server entry.

Marc.
