The early indications are that you sir, are the man. For me the file was /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme. After the edit you suggested, all seems well. Thank you so much for your help. I would not have been able to rotate XFree86-4.3.0 without it. -This just in... X still crashes, but nowhere near as much. It seems to crash only with the Gnome window manager, but not with pwm for instance.
