Re: Installing and configuring XFree86

Hi,

We can probably fix the mouse problem you are experiencing, but in the long
run, you probably want to fix the original error in a different way.

FC3 is shipped with a pretty recent X-server (graphics software) from X.org.
This is compatable with the most recent acecelerated drivers. So, your
original problem could probably be better fixed by getting the original
software that came with FC3 working, rather than installing a different
X-server (fXFree86) and a proprietary driver (from ATI).

As you surmise, this is usually caused by 3D acceleration not being enabled.

?? I presume that the config file is /etc/X/Xorg.conf?

Maybe, but probably not. I would expect FC3 to have OpenGL installed. The most
commonly-used OpenGL implementation is called "MESA". If you look on your
machine, I would expect you will find it is installed.

No, this is not correct. The ATI driver from ATI comes with a version of
OpenGL, but that is not the only OpenGL implementation for Linux.

Correct, FC3 ships with an X-server from X.org, rather than the X-server from
XFree86.

You need to change the "live" file, which is usually in /etc/X/XFConfig

Hope this helps.

Cheers!
