There is a difference between Linux THASAY and Slackware 10.0 see text below
The kernel are the same but the X package are not. One is from XFree86 and the other is from X.org

I also experienced font problems when starting X. I  have an error during the installation when the install script was installing X11-fonts-misc-6.7.0-noarch-1.tgz. After the fresh install was completed I manual installed all the fonts. So it was not the media.

Anyway, Yes there is a font problem with the installation.

I will work your issue currently with the other issue I am currently working, since I have to work with x.org X version anyway. Their version may have the updated Intel video driver that I need for  another issue.

The moment I have the solution I will get back to you.
