I think you want to be using the ati driver rather than the vga driver. In the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 replace Driver "vga" with Driver "ati". XFree86 4.0.3 is pretty old though and maybe it didn't support that card back then. I don't know enough about the ati driver to tell. Also, the driver might have been called "r128" back then. 4.0.3 is a few years old and I don't remember it very well. Mark.
