Cirrus 7543 Chipset Issue

I am trying to get Red Hat 9 Linux to work on my Compaq LTE5300 laptop. If I understood it correctly, I believe the version of XFree86 is 4.3.0-2 comes with RH 9. It is equipped with a full complement of memory, 10G HDD and the Cirrus Viking CL-GD 7543 chipset.

When Linux boots and tries to start the graphical interface, an error saying that the depth of 16 is invalid. With Windows, the machine works fine in 800x600 mode with 16 bit colours.

I have tried various manual configurations including 640x480 and 16 bit depth and it just refuses to start.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong and being a Newbie at this, I am at my wits end. Any help or other form of enlightenment would be appreciated.

Since my machine is not networkable yet, I have not been able to extract the log file to submit with this e-mail.

Regards and thanks for any help.
