Opeen the /etc/X11/XF86Config file and
in the files section,
add the lines
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/local"
and if this doesnt solve the problem,
comment the earlier line in the file using #
#FontPath "something "
probably the font server specified in teh fontpath b4 is not working ...
this solves the problem.......
