Mark, Went into xinitrc and commented out "twm" and "xterm"s. replaced with 'exec gnome-session', runlevel 5 from inittab and I'm doing great. I think I'll try upgrading the 2.4.7-10 kernel and see where that goes. Also playing around with the Mozilla Firefox browser and firewalls. The only problem I have now is that the text appears a little rough -- not tight and smooth -- as if there were not enough pixels or whatever.
