testing graphics using "Tux Racer"

Hi all,

My basic problem is I'm still trying to find *where* I should be looking to 
solve my problem.

I have two DELL notebooks, each running RedHat 9.0 and XFree86 4.3.0-2

My ultimate intention is to try to get CAD software working acceptably under 
linux (possibly using WINE), but I am using pure linux applications (eg Tux 
Racer) to verify the graphics performance before I start trying to get the 
CAD software working.

Both notebooks are running ATI Radeon Mobility graphics cards. I have been 
trying to get reasonable graphics performance from each card. The current 
situation is that one notebook works well, but the other has display 
problems, for example when running the Tux Racer game.

The problem is that while the frame rate is acceptable (ie, I see continuous, 
smooth movement), I am seeing bad "artifacts", that look like various 
polygons are being erroneously displayed in front of others, instead of 
behind them. The effect is that this looks like I am continuously flying 
through white polygons. If I sit back, it looks a bit like Tux is racing 
through "searchlights", except the rays of the searchlights are opaque, 
rather than transparent.

I have no idea where to start diagnosing such a problem. Is it OpebGL, refresh 
rates, acceleration modes, or something else?

On both notebooks, I am now using the "kernel-tainting" ATI proprietary driver 
(fglrx). The standard open-source drivers (I tried both "vesa" and "radeon") 
worked well on both machines for the desktop, and supported all screen 
resolutions. However, when I tested graphics performance, by trying the Tux 
Racer game, the screen refresh rate seemed less than 1 frame per second, and 
the game was unplayable.

I tried a few tuning parameters for the open-source drivers, such as 'AGPMode 
"4"', but with no apparent improvement. Eventually I tried the proprietary 
driver from ATI, which worked perfectly on the first notebook (DELL latitude 
D600, ATI Radeon Mobility 9000). The second notebook is an Inspiron 8600 with 
wide screen and an ATI Radeon Mobility 9600, and is the one with the display 
problems in Tux Racer. I can see no pertinent errors in 
/var/log/XFree86.0.log, nor in /var/log/messages (this doesn't mean that 
there aren't any, it just means I don't recognise any as being pertinent to 
the video subsystem).

I would actually prefer to revert to an open-source driver, if I could get it 
to work acceptably. Alternatively, I am happy to tune parameters to get the 
ATI driver to work on the second notebook.

Can anyone point me to documentation, FAQ's, similar questions, or the like to 
help me either get an open-source driver working properly, or to resolve the 
problem with the ATI driver?

I've attached my XF86Config file and XFree86.0.log files below, in case this
