Hello all -- my name's Etha Williams. I'm 17/f/Santa Monica and a very happy Mac OSX/Darwin user. A while back I installed xfree86, but then my tech-illiterate mom decided that having non-preinstalled packages on the computer was causing the computer to "crash" (it froze once or twice) and thus removed xfree86. Now I'm reinstalling xfree86, but not without difficulties. When I log out and then enter again as >console and type exec startx, a chunk of text appears for a slight second. Then, before I can make out ANY of what it says, the screen flashes back to the aqua OSX gui. I encountered quite a few difficulties in my installation and I'm sure this is what caused it, but I can't figure out what to do. Here's a log of what happened when I ran sh xinstall.sh (which I downloaded into the /usr/ directory): [localhost:~] ann% sh xinstall.sh Welcome to the XFree86 4.4.0 installer You are strongly advised to backup your existing XFree86 installation before proceeding. This includes the /usr/X11R6, /etc/X11 and /etc/fonts directories. The installation process will overwrite existing files in those directories, and this may include some configuration files that may have been customised. If you are installing a version different from 4.4.0, you may need an updated version of this installer script. Do you wish to continue? You appear to have a termcap file: /usr/share/misc/termcap This should be edited manually to replace the xterm entries with those in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/etc/xterm.termcap Note: the new xterm entries are required to take full advantage of new features, but they may cause problems when used with older versions of xterm. A terminal type 'xterm-r6' is included for compatibility with the standard X11R6 version of xterm. Installation complete. I think one of the major problems I'm encountering is the problem that permission is denied for the mkdir commands. How should I go about changing the permissions for this? Also, how can I "edit manually to replace the xterm entries with those in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/etc/xterm.termcap (which, incidentally, doesn't exist due to my lacking permission to mkdir in the first place)? Sorry if I'm being vague with my questions/problems...but quite frankly, I don't know what to do myself at this point. I've tried manually making my own directories (/usr/X11R6/, &c) but that didn't seem to do any good. Thanks in advance, Etha. -- "Question authority." "Are you sure that's a good idea?" "Shut up.
