problems with starting xdm at boot

hello,

since some month i've problems with my debian/unstable installation,
running xfree86 4.3.0.dfsg.1-6.

i've a matrox g400 dualhead 32mb and i use matroxfb for console + mga x
module for X.

at boot, xdm starts as last process, but for some reason it freezes
completely at some stage, sometimes at typing user/passwd, sometimes at
starting the window manager.

"it freezes" means, that the screen freezes completely, no screen change
etc is possible any longer, only the power off button still works, and
shutdowns the machine (thanks to ACPI support in kernel).

the second way to turn the machine in a working one is, to press
<alt>+<sysrq>+<k>, afterwards changing to a console, logging in and
stopping xdm.

as the screen freezes but still is recoverable through <sysrq> keys i
don't think that it's a hardware problem.
additional i already tried another g400 (single head with 16mb) and got
similar problems.

i first thought that it might be problems with matroxfb (framebuffer
kernel driver), but after intensive debugging, and _no_ kernel messages
at freeze, matroxfb maintainer believes that the bug is in xfree86.

did anyone make similar experiences?

bye
 jonas
