Thanks a lot! I seem to have fixed the original problem now in almost the way
you described. I replaced the unix/:7100 line with the paths where the fonts
were installed. This stopped the crashing problem in much the same way as
excluding the line altogether as many fonts offered in gimp etc were still
missing. I was unable to locate them anywhere on my hard drive so I added the
unix/:7100 line AFTER the other font paths (the crashing problem persists if it
checks whatever is at the end of port 7100 first) and now I have access to the
full range of fonts and no crashing. I don't know how stable this will be but it
seems to work for now :)
