It's using 8-bit color depth, which will make things look pretty rotten. In the "Screen" section, change the Depth and the DefaultDepth to 24 and see if that meets more with your expectations.
Yeah, thanks Ryan, I discovered xvidtune yesterday, and quickly found that 24 bit looks a whole lot better than 8 bit ;-)
I did get it going in 1280x1024 eventually - with Matrox G450s and G550s, if you use a DVI monitor, you have to use the mga_hal_drv.o X module, in addition to the standard mga_drv.o X driver. I downloaded the binary modules packages for mga 3.0 from the Matrox site and copied the mga_hal_drv.o file to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/, added 'Option "DigitalScreen" "yes"' to my XF86Config file and restarted X, and I'm now thinking I need glasses after a couple of days at 800x600 8-)
