You are running a much newer kernel on the debian system.  If you downgrade to,
say, 2.4.26, things would likely work again.

Note that I am _not_ saying that this is a kernel problem.  It's just that,
over time, the kernel is becoming smarter about ACPI than the X server can
currently handle.
