In either case, you need to install XFree86 fonts. This will likely be a package made for your distribution. If you installed from source, I would recommend getting every .tgz file available from an XFree mirror and installing all of them, not just the first 3 or 4. When you say "gnome coming up very well", it sounds like you mean that GNOME is starting just fine, but you're getting this temporary error message.
