Core pointer

I have tried to start linux but get an error it canot find core pointer. 
That being the mouse, I am thinking how can I enable the pointing device 
with out doing something drastic. Is there a way to enable the mouse or 
mount the mouse at the command line? How do I mount the CD rom device? I 
have been away from linux tooooo long and have forgotten some of the 
commands. Please bear with me.
