Display size

How to configure X to fit everything it displays in the screen area? I'm 
using a notebook with 1400x1050 LCD panel, in this resolution X displays 
everything correctly, but when I lower the resolution the desktop size 
is still 1400x1050 and doesn't fit on the screen, how to make it fit?
