I have managed to finally get past X crashing startup and can do startx
successfully.
I tracked some dscussions on comp.os.linux.portable news group pointing to
http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Personal/G.Wilford/Inspiron8500/ and how to get a
similar flat panel display (On Dell Inspiron) and I added the one line G.
Wilfor suggested in XF86Config file as well as adding the additional
resolutions. Specificaly:
Add:
	DisplaySize 330	210
In Monitor section
and Edit:
	Modes "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
In Display section (added 1400x1050).

Maybe someone can explain the significance of DsiplaySize entry (I do not
think Modes was a significant)

Best to all and thanks

Could you include the /etc/X11/XF86Config file? I think the problem is the
values used in Monitor0 section, but need to see the config file to be
certain.

(II) R128(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 31.50-90.00 kHz
(II) R128(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 59.00-75.00 Hz

Do you know the Vertical Refresh and Horizontial Sync for the laptop?
