   It appears that 4.2.0 did not support the chip:

  But only:

> (II) S3: driver (version 0.3.5 for S3 chipset: 964-0, 964-1, 968,

  It looks like support for your card was added Fri Jul 4 15:24:28 2003 UTC
(8 months, 3 weeks ago).  The CHANGELOG entry was.

278. Added support for Trio64UV+ and Trio64V2/DX/GX to S3 driver (backport
      from 3.x) (Bugzilla #465, Alexej Baj).

   The next official release after that would have been XFree86 4.4.
It's funny.  That card was probably well supported back in XFree86 3.x,
when those cards were still in wide use.
