I finally found the right solution for my problem. I have spent a lot of time googling around and found a dozen possible solutions, which did not work for me (such as trying XFree 4.4). Finally I found the "865patch" solution (http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html), written by Christian Zietz, which worked immediately. So, now, with my Intel Extreme Graphics card, the i865G chipset, and a 15" LCP monitor, I can get 1024x768 resolution in 24-bit color. The error messages I was getting ("No screen founds", "No mode of this name"), were only symptoms of a lack of video memory. As for the impressive list of video modes given in the XFree log, they are all useless unless a star ("*") is given before the name of the mode. This is why, though I was seeing listed the modes I wanted to access, I could not use them. So thanks again to Christian for is very valuable contribution.
