   You can specify the depth to use from the commandline
with syntax like:

    "startx -- -depth 8"

assuming you have in your Section "Screen", a Subsection
"Display" for each depth.  The DefaultDepth in the Section
"Screen" is the one used when you don't specify a depth.
It is possible for you to start a second X-server on another
VT and switch back and forth between them, or just start
a depth 8 server when you need it.  If all your scripts are
OK, something like "startx -- -depth 8 :1" will start a 
second X server on another VT.
