I saw your earlier post, which is how I found out about 855wrap.  So
you've already been a tremendous help, thanks!

It's a recent Debian Testing installation.

Yup, I tried it unset, at 4096, 8192, 16384, 32768, 65536, and 131072,
all with the exact same effect.

Ah, good catch!  I hadn't noticed that was what was failing.  For this
run, I had the i810 module installed, but I just tried again with
i830, and it did the exact same thing (including the DRI error in the
logfile)

It starts the XFree 4.2.x that came with my distro, and it does the
exact same thing.
