Im not sure how much of the information here you can
help me with, nor do I know who will even read this,
but i have to try. I am new to linux, and there is no
one physically present who can show me anything about
it, and there are only 2 people who i know who i can
talk to so Ive relied on forums. But enough of the
whining sap and onto the problem.

I am running a dual boot with XP and Mandrake 9.2. I
have a macintosh Flat Panel 15" studio display
attached to an eVGA GeForce FX5900 through DVI. When
i boot up mandrake i can access terminal boot up on
the mac display, but as soon as i enter the gui the
mac display dies on me. I thought this to be a
problem with one of two things, or maybe even both.
First off, i thought my driver could be updated to fix
the problem. When i attempted to install the nvidia
offical driver i would attempt a startx and it would
come back and say there was an nvidia driver kernel
compile error, so i swtiched it back to the old driver
and tried startx, the mac screen went dead, atleast i
was back at square one.
So then i tried the xf86config setup utility. I do
not know shit about any of this. I do not know how
important the refresh rates are (though i finally
found some specs on the mac website). I think that
the problem lies within my xf86config file, but again,
im not in contact with people who know about any of
this. Just any help, any stepping stones to start on,
anything would keep me from going bonkers.
