It's been a while that I have two problems with XFree86 and my Voodoo 3 2000 (PCI). I'm using Slackware 9.1 which ships XFree86 4.3.0. I use XFree86 without Xinerama but with DRI enabled. I'm running my desktop at 1280x1024@16bpp. --- XFree86 Version 4.3.0 Release Date: 27 February 2003 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6 Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.22 i686 [ELF] Build Date: 16 September 2003 Before reporting problems, check http://www.XFree86.Org/ to make sure that you have the latest version. Module Loader present --- The first and most annoying problem is that XFree86 will hose my consoles when I logout. I use KDM/KDE. Actually it doesn't freeze Linux, so I can log onto my machine by ssh and run kdm again, and I can log back into KDE, but still my consoles are dead (I'm using framebuffer consoles, but the problem remains even with normal consoles). If I do CTRL+ALT+Fx all I get is an image of my X display on VC/7. The second problem which is less annoying is that when I switch VCs sometimes (at random) the font is slightly corrupted. To fix that I can switch back to X and then switch back again to the console. Of course I've googled and looked through this mailling list's archive, but I didn't find anything. Anyway I've found a thread on that problem on Red Hat's bugzilla which is quite old (so this problem is not anything new). http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=38717 This RedHat guy suggests that you can't use X with Voodoo 3 at anything more than 1024x768@16bpp to be able to use DRI (that is able to play games with hardware acceleration). But I only recently upgraded my monitor to a 17" and before that I was using X at 1024x768@16bpp with DRI and I had exactly the same problems. He suggest that it's a limitation of XFree86 and adds: "Future versions of XFree86 will at some point likely change the way this limitation affects people, once RandR is in, I suspect they will rework the allocation of resources, so that 2D resources can be reclaimed, and then your 2D resolution wont affect fullscreen DRI operation, only windowed operation." Is that correct? And if it is, are there any plans to implement the missing functionality? (I know I can have my desktop at 1280x1024@32bpp with Wingdoze XP and play games to my hearts contents although of course the game themselves run at maximum 1024x768@16bpp).
