So XFree86 ran without problems at decent res and colour depth with bios
A02 and not A03 right?

This bit tells you that there isn't enough system memory allocated for
graphics.  Sicne the chipset uses system memory, the BIOS should
pre-allocate enough for the graphics stuff, but it isn't.  And since you
need more than 892KB to get a decent res and depth.....

There is a patch about called 855patch that will hack the bios to insert a
bigger number and then you can use the VideoRam option to allocate more
memory.

I'm interested that things worked ok under bios A02.  Can you send the log
with things working?  surely it'd need a decent amount of memory?  So did
dell *reduce* the amount of memory allocated int the BIOS update?
