Quoth david zanella: > Dinked around with it a bit...then discovered that dell upgraded the > bios from A02 to A03. Hmmm...found the A02 bios (on a dell ftp server in > japan) and flashed the bios. Worked fine on the A02 bios. So XFree86 ran without problems at decent res and colour depth with bios A02 and not A03 right? > (II) I810(0): detected 892 kB stolen memory. > (II) I810(0): I830CheckAvailableMemory: 441340 kB available > (II) I810(0): Will attempt to tell the BIOS that there is 12288 kB VideoRAM > (WW) I810(0): Extended BIOS function 0x5f11 not supported. > (II) I810(0): BIOS view of memory size can't be changed (this is not an error). This bit tells you that there isn't enough system memory allocated for graphics. Sicne the chipset uses system memory, the BIOS should pre-allocate enough for the graphics stuff, but it isn't. And since you need more than 892KB to get a decent res and depth..... There is a patch about called 855patch that will hack the bios to insert a bigger number and then you can use the VideoRam option to allocate more memory. I'm interested that things worked ok under bios A02. Can you send the log with things working? surely it'd need a decent amount of memory? So did dell *reduce* the amount of memory allocated int the BIOS update? cheers chris _______________________________________________ XFree86 mailing list XFree86@xxxxxxxxxxx http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
