hi marc,

thx for your quick reply ..... I was afraid for that ... but has this
changed since ver 4.2 since it works in that release ?

Also, is there anway I can bypass this if I'm prepared to take the risk (of
the hangs/lockups) ?

I got the above laptop, running XFree86 4.2.0 worked fine both with
Solaris and Redhat but since I tried to upgrade to 4.3.0 (i.e. upgrade XFree on solaris and installing suse 8.1 it all works except that the external vga port can't be used by hitting [Fn] + [F8] :(

I reverted back to 4.2.0 in solaris and functionallity is back ......

I have tried several options in /etc/X11/XFconfig, upgraded the laptop's BIOS but still don't seem to be able to use 4.3.0 with the
system

I can see below mentioned on http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/ati7.html
so does that mean I shouldn't expect to be able to switch to my external vga port ??

That's correct. And for the reasons stated.

# The use of a laptop's hot-keys to switch displays while this driver is active can cause lockups and/or other woes, and is therefore not recommended. It is not currently possible to solve this problem.
